5 Steps to an Employer Brand Story

5 Steps to an Employer Brand Story Stories have been in this world for a long, long time. Ever since the first human beings started to communicate with another, the art of storytelling was formed. Knowing exactly when it started is a myth… until of course we (finally!) develop the first ever time machine and travel back in time to figure it out. While waiting for the future, we’ll help you find your way through the tales of employer branding with storytelling. What’s your story? First of all: What story do you want to tell? Finding your personal or branded story is harder than it seems. It will take a bit of digging, before you get to the actual core. Reflection is key, so we recommend you take a look at your brand and analyse it until there’s nothing left to analyse. Use brand identity models (Hofstede, Kapferer or Keller for example) to get a grip on your analysis. Guidelines are essential, because trust us, you might get lost along the way. If all goes well, you’ve followed the steps and got to the end, DON’T STOP THERE! We repeat: do not stop right there. You’ll only have an internal perspective, so you have to gather different point of views. Both professional and personal opinions will help develop your story and brand identity even more. Head-to-mid-to-tail Right. If you’ve found your story and explored it with the models we described in the above paragraph, you’re ready for the next step. Having an interesting story or brand identity is not enough. Sure, with the help of both a brand identity model as well as different external opinions, you’ve concluded a main brand story. The next step is to make a proper story out of it. All good stories have a head-middle-tail structure. So, we stick with the old Greek, and do exactly the same. Besides the “head-to-mid-to-tail”, the almighty Aristotle also used three key features that make up a perfect story: Ethos Pathos Logos. We totally understand that you’re not fluently speaking Greek, so let’s translate that: credibility, psychology and reasonability. We’ll advise you to keep these three key features in mind, whilst restructuring your brand story. Human characters The introduction of characters within your story can really take your brand to the next level. However, doing so (in the right way) can be difficult. Some characters will forever have a certain image attached to them. You literally can not think of the brand without thinking of the character. These examples have deeper values than just being a pretty face. Just sticking a face on a product will therefore not work. To create an engaging communication with your audience, an emotional human aspect should be added. An excellent example of a successful character of a brand is Mickey Mouse. The Disney tune immediately started to play in your head, didn’t it? Walt Disney himself created this creature in 1928 and it has been a success ever since. MMs really took humanizing features to a new level. The coloured characters all have different emotions that stand out. Yellow for example is shy and always positive, whilst Orange is always stressed and looking over his shoulder. Red, for that matter, has no fear and is confident no matter what. See, we can even learn something from them! What’s next? You’ve developed your story, from head to tail, including characters with emotions. Cool. Nice job. Does it stop here? Of course not. This is where so many companies screw up. They’ve put up this lovely story and then just leave it there. NO! You have to tell the world! After all, this is the story that will set your brand apart. You should treat your story like a marketing campaign. Discover where and how you want to share your story and develop the right content for the right channels. You could also encourage interaction with your audience, by using a puzzle, prize or question. Update, update, update! Do us a favour and evaluate your story every now and then. Aspects such as major changes within the company might change your brand story. So keep it up-to-date! Here’s another golden tip: Use your story to attract talented candidates by including current candidates. Updating your story with your current team is essential, so why not let them play a part in your story? By doing this you are keeping your brand up to date and relevant. Potential candidates will see this, and will want to become a part of your brand. There you have it: five steps to create an engaging story. By the way: do you realise you’ve been a part of this story? Whilst reading this article and gaining new knowledge, you’ve become a part of our story. So, welcome to the family and please: spread the story-love!

Newsflash Youre Going To Die One Day

Newsflash Youre Going To Die One Day I hate to be Captain Obvious but I really have to ask: do you know you’re going to die one day? I know, this is exactly how you wanted to start your Thursday, with a warm reminder that our days on earth are numbered. But I don’t mean to put a damper on your day. On the contrary, today I hope to inspire you. I know it’s the holiday season because my emotions have been up and down like a see-saw. Since my teenage years, I’ve been a little apprehensive about the holidays; I associate them with stress. For the most part, I think that this has simply become a self-fulfilling prophesy. So I’ve made a decision to enjoy the holidays this year and not approach it with any negativity. Why? Because I’m going to die one day and God-willing, I have several decades of holidays ahead of me and I better stop the cycle before it becomes a vicious one. Sometimes our lives after college, can seem like a cycle too â€" wake up, go to work or go to school, maybe work out, maybe watch some television, maybe hang out with some people; Facebook, Twitter, etc. On the weekends, go to brunch, watch some more television, maybe go out, and maybe stay in. Either way, it feels like a cycle. It’s not the worst cycle in the world but sometimes it feels like we’re not living but merely existing. When was the last time you did something that made you feel alive? This thought came to me last week when my friend gave me a ride home on her bicycle. Apart from the fact that the movie One Day, completely ruined the idea of biking in a city Anna Hathway’s character gets horrifically hit by a bus and dies after finally getting hitched with the guy who she’s been in love with for over a decade the idea of biking in Chicago scares me half to death. And I am in no way advocating getting on the “backseat” of a bike (I’m pretty sure that’s illegal actually), but I felt alive; mostly because I thought we were going to die at any moment, but the feeling of trying something new, made me feel alive, if only mildly. It got me thinking, we should feel more alive when we’re, well, living. It’s a scary feeling, the feeling of being alive, but it’s also thrilling and satisfying. Whether it’s going for that job that we’ve been eyeing, or trying to get into an education program we think we’ll love or moving to a new city or country or approaching that guy or girl you think is the finest thing since sliced bread â€" doing things that are new, things that take you out of your comfort zone, will make you feel alive. That my friends, is simply a fact of life. None of us like to think about it or talk about it but one day you and I are definitely going to die â€" this is one of the few certainties we have. So, that dream, that goal, that thing that you keep putting off to the next day or the perfect time; that thing that will make you feel alive â€" go and do it now. Because even more than just the fact that you are going to die one day, the last thing you want to happen in your last years is to look back on a life with many dreams and goals and things that you could have, should have, and would have done. So break the cycle; do whatever you must, but break your cycle. You’re going to die one day. So till then, live; truly just live.

The Senior Series Should Seniors Skip Spring Break this Year

The Senior Series Should Seniors Skip Spring Break this Year At the end of my summer internship two years ago, my boss offered a single piece of advice for the remainder of my college career: take an awesome senior-year spring break. Why? He said that once I graduated into the career world it would become nearly impossible to ever find one week during which all of my friends and I would be free to go anywhere and have fun. Im disappointed to report that Ive let my former boss down. Instead of relaxing in sunny Florida, Ill be spending my spring break in snowy Ohio, working hard to land an entry-level career. The frustrating part is, I already spent a big chunk of my spring break savings back in January traveling for an out-of-town job interview and now I feel like the responsible thing to do is save the rest for future non-reimbursable interviews. Theres something else about spring break that just doesnt feel right given todays employment environment. Senior year spring break is supposed to be a celebration.. a last chance to commemorate the days before our careers become the focus of our lives. But right now many of us dont have careers, or upcoming-careers; some dont even have career-prospects. In two and a half months many seniors will graduate into unemployment and move back in with mom and dad. On the other hand, maybe spring break can be a chance for seniors to cheer themselves up from the bleakness of the employment environment. Maybe some, if they play their cards right, will turn vacation into a networking opportunity. If youre a senior, did the employment environment alter your spring break plans this year?

Everyone Needs a Father Figure

Everyone Needs a Father Figure Its Fathers Day and I am preaching about the importance of having a father figure in your life. We all need one- an male influence who shares different perspectives on lifes experiences and makes us see and think about things differently. Someone who is older and wiser. A man who makes us toe the line, stand up straight and do the right thing. In my life, I was lucky to have Pop to show me the ropes of life. He influenced my life in ways I couldnt have predicted or imagined. He also served as advisor for many others seeking knowledge, insight, advice or a pick-me-up. He wasnt perfect, nor a saint. He was human, flawed like the rest of us. However, he held a constant presence in my life. That presence was everything, looking back. In my circle of friends, I sadly have lots of fatherless friends- their dads left too early. On purpose or by cosmic design, new male influences step up and into the lives of those who are fatherless. These new father figures fill the void or pick up the missing pieces, those things only a guy can do. So this Fathers Daycelebrate and honor those father figures in your life. Say thank you. Appreciate their presence. And reflect on the impact they have on you today. Who knows what the long term outcome will be, but life will somehow be richer because of it. Hugs and cheers to all my fatherless friends. And step forward father figures, you know who you are, and do the right thing. Everyone needs a mentor, role model or sounding board. Do you have one?

How to get a return on investment for re-training

How to get a return on investment for re-training How to Get ROI on Re-Training I have been working in information technology in the same area for the last 15 years. I have been burned out for several years but make a high level of salary. I decided that in order for me to revive my excitement for IT, I should update my skill set to something that interests me. I enrolled in technical classes in the evenings and have knocked out six IT certifications. I already have many older certifications, a bachelor degree, and an MBA. My question is, how do I get the experience in my new set of skills without taking a huge cut in pay? I want to make all of my hard work and studying pay off. I am excited to try a little different slice of the IT world. Answer from Dana: Thank you for sharing a number of challenges common to many of my clients and readers: burn-out, trying to get excited again, getting more certificates or training, needing to keep current income levels steady, and hoping for a short-term return on investment on training. I’ll address each one: 1. Burn-out It’s important that you understand why and how you burned out so you can avoid doing it again. List the attributes you strive for in your new role and things you want to avoid. No training or certificates can help you find the right next move that you will enjoy. 2. Re-energizing What else are you doing to get ready for your next role? Did you clear your head, and perhaps take some time off? Are you networking right now with industry associations and discussion groups, and meeting inspiring people? What are you learning about yourself that will change what you will do differently next time? 3. Getting more certificates Congratulations on doing this. However, I hope you did it for your benefit as well as for an employer’s future benefit. You learned more about your profession, updated your skill set and knowledge, and will add more value to an organization in the long term. 4. Hoping for a short-term payback from your certificates The short answer is it won’t happen. I recently met a soon-to-be MBA graduate who was employed by a large company here in Seattle. He was proud to announce to me that he would be going into his boss’s office the day after he graduates and demanding a salary increase since he got his MBA. I wish I had gotten his number to ask him how that conversation went. New education does not entitle anybody to more money, a better office, or a bigger title. You have choices now: Request a new role and stay with your current company Job-search to join a new company (ideally, while you are gainfully employed). Update your résumé, looking at the whole document in a fresh way. Update the way you apply to your next positions.
